P G Abraham Padinjarethalackel
P G Abraham Padinjarethalackel
Born to Mr George A Joseph
and Mrs Mariamma George in 1932 at Kottayam, Mr P G Abraham Padinjarethalackel
showed his likeness to music from very young age. He grew up as a good singer
and took up a career with Indian Aluminium Company, Eloor as HR Executive. His
melodious voice has left lasting impressions with the congregations at parent
parish Kottayam Cheria Pally and later at St Gregoriose Orthodox Church, Eloor.
Due to personal reasons, he had to move to Ernakulam and in no time, he became
a living legend in Liturgical Music at St George Orthodox Valiya Pally,
Palarivattom.
Though he was a singer of
note during his young days, he realised his call of not being just a singer,
but a lyricist and composer. Before his live roles as Lyricist and Composer, P
G Abraham had been active with Saar East Broadcasting Associates (SEBA) and his
numbers in light music used to be regularly aired by Radio Manila. His wife
Sanju Abraham too joined him in these ventures. Sanju hails from Valiath
Airookuzhiyil family, Mulakkuzha, Chengannur. Following these radio broadcasts
through Radio Manila, he was a regular with All India Radio too for a period of
time.
Gradually, he switched
over to devotional music almost totally and set up a Choir of high quality at
Palarivattom St George Orthodox Valiya Pally, Ernakulam. He insisted that the
choir should stand with congregation facing the East and the role ought to be providing
lead in singing hymns and not singing themselves in pitches unfriendly to
ordinary men and women. Consequently, if
the whole congregation at this parish joined in hymns during worship, the
credit goes to P G Abraham for setting the trend.
He had a passion to
nurture upcoming talented singers and encouraging them to perfection and
professional excellence. He also took interest is creating immemorial beauties
for OVBS programmes and Christmas Carol songs that would be lasting for
ages. He also worked out new generation
convention hymns which found acceptance in all Christian denominations. His
composing with a touch of folk style was a welcome deviation and a pointer to
indigenisation.
As a choir master, he
never dominated or over ruled any one. Highly tolerant with failures or laxity
in quality, he was never a terror and this made his wards see him as a friend
rather than a master. Despite variance in talents, he treated everyone equal. Blessed
with two daughters Bindu and Thanu, both well settled and his wards, were made
to feel equal with others in sessions and were his associates in various
concerts with their mother Sanju.
It was in the year 2002, a
global competition of Choir singing was held at The Hague, Netherlands and the
SUMORO Choir of Shruthy School of Liturgical Music led by Fr M P George bagged
the first prize singing a number EN PRANANUM of P G Abraham and trained by him.
This achievement is cherished by P G Abraham as a most valuable reward for his
musical career. Before this, in 1999, he was honoured by our Church at Parumala
and HH Mar Thoma Baseliose Mathews II presented him the award, which finds a
most prominent place in the family drawing room.
Apart from music, P G
Abraham was an ardent interior designer of landscapes and one can see the
talent of P G Abraham displayed at many places in and around Ernakulam.
And after a brief illness,
P G Abraham left us in 2003 leaving a vacuum in the community of Liturgy music
and he is laid to rest at the Puthan Pally cemetery of Cheria Pally,
Kottayam. Though P G Abraham has gone to
where he really belongs to, the legacy is retained with us and we have a
responsibility to move forward through the path opened by him.
